What do you think? I say yes! Let me show you how being the virtuous woman found in Proverbs may not mean what you think, and how the passage is still relevant today. After all, each verse and passage in the Bible needs to be taken into context of the entire Bible. The amount of expectations placed on women in our society today is crazy. Our society places a high standard of perfection that women often feel is overwhelming — because it is! God never meant for us to work ourselves to death trying to be perfect. But all of these ideals of perfection are about the outward appearance.
We wake up each morning and put on that mask of perfection before we step out the door or post on social media. Women strive for perfection in this world when really they need to be striving for perfection in light of eternity, abiding in Christ, our perfect savior. Becoming a Proverbs 31 Woman is really about living out the gospel in our daily lives. Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own.
But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. You see, as followers of Christ we are to press on, leaving behind our old life and seeking Him each day to live in us. Becoming a Proverbs 31 Woman is about learning from our mistakes and walking with Jesus. The woman God calls us to be has everything to do with grace, faith, having purpose — not worrying about perfection, and focusing on principles, and not how many works we can accomplish in a day.
You need Jesus! God looks at the heart, while man looks at the outward appearance. When it snows, she has no fear for her household; for all of them are clothed in scarlet. There are so many things that can be out of our control as a mother, wife, sister, etc. We have to have faith that God is taking care of every detail, no matter how small. Trust Him. Becoming a Proverbs 31 Woman is about trusting a risen savior with all that we have.
When we stress and worry about everything, we steal our own joy, peace, and calm. She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue. When we are able to understand faith and how to incorporate it into our daily lives , our character grows.
The Proverbs 31 woman is clothed with strength and dignity because God has clothed her with grace and wisdom through faith. When we have true faith, God is able to use us in so many ways, without limits. Passing Down Wisdom For women in particular, the Scriptures attach value to our life experience. Devoting ourselves to all kinds of good deeds in response to the call of Jesus is the mark of a disciple. Washing the feet of the saints, showing hospitality, and helping those in trouble is a kingdom life, one that simultaneously transcends and permeates all vocational paths.
However, for those who have married, raised children, and done the work of homemaking, there are specific instructions to pass on knowledge and wisdom gained from years of experience.
Because these are hard, demanding roles, and all along the way there are questions: What does it look like to love a particular man for the long haul? How do we care for the ongoing needs of our children—needs that are never ending and many times overwhelming? And what does it mean to create a home that enables a family to move out into the world with deep resources to draw upon?
Four ways to become a woman of wisdom
We usually come to these places in life without a clue for what the years ahead will require. When young couples marry, they give a great deal of thought and planning to their paid careers, but they are often shocked at the intricacies of bringing care and nurture to a home and family.
A woman who has been there can give this needed perspective, along with practical helps and inspiring ideas. As a young mother I had two important mentors.
On a series of Saturday mornings, she invited women to sit in her living room and discuss things like sex, marriage, motherhood, and household management. She passed on practical helps in all these areas.
She had philosophies and systems in place that I was lacking, and I gained from her willingness to share what she knew. I knew her only through her books, but because she wrote so personally and extensively about her life as she followed Christ, her writing was a close second to being with her in person. Her words enlarged my vision for the work and inspired me to imagine good stories in the life of my family, as well as others I would care for in the coming years. The Schaeffers were my first teachers in learning to think through the implications of the Lordship of Christ over all of life.
